Sometimes ya gotta judge a book...

As we finalize the covers for issue 2 (and then issue 3), we revisited issue 1 to remember what we did, and why, and whether to make any tweaks going forward.

The original title font we came across was Zombie! By Patrick Broderick (based on the typeface Neuland Black).

While we really liked it, Adam pushed us to experiment. We came up with something more western (Nashville), and weathered, and did his own wizardry, and came up with something more iconic:

Similarly, we experimented with different options for the credits. First we tried just last names (Scoble / Thiara / Aira) but the Thiara / Aira looked a bit like an error.

However, for the variant covers, we wanted to play a bit more. So for the Pulp cover, we said let’s change the “studio logo” box to something more like a Gold Key comic (from the 1960s), and ditch the credits completely to have it “cleaner.”

And then we decided to go back to the Zombie! font for the title.

(We know it’s not suggested to have multiple versions of logos and title treatment and what not, but we’re playing and experimenting, so this is all in the ‘see what works category.’)

For Diego Giribaldi’s “Red Cowboy” character spotlight, we tried the Nashville variant, but the skinny letters didn’t frame Moses well.

So we instead tried to squeeze the credits in at the bottom, as you’ll see here. Which isn’t bad at all. But it does muddy the ground around Moses’ feet and the train.

In the end, we decided to keep the art at the forefront (which is also why the title is dropped in behind Moses), and to use the Zombie! font as the stronger one in this instance. (And because we were using it here, we felt more justified in using it on the Pulp cover, up above).

Finally, for Mato Saw’s awesome and horrific “Moon” cover, again the art was so striking we decided not to cover any of it up and left it as a virgin cover. We did put the company logo on the back cover, just so there would be some identification.

As we lock down the covers for issue 2, I’ll share those again and explain our choices.
